Indices is basically how many times you multiply the same number.

Tip: You could also say five squared.

  • The base is the number you multiply
  • And the number on the top is how many times you multiply it.

To work out the answer in the image above all you need to do is:

  1. 5×5 (As the index stipulates how many times you need to multiply the base)
  2. = 25

As you can see it is not hard to work out!

Worded Questions:

Jim had 10 bags and had 5 lollies in each. He went to the shops but didn’t no how many lollies to buy. How many lollies does Jim have to buy from the shop.

  1. 510
  2. = 5x5x5x5x5x5x5x5x5x5
  3. =9765625

Note: 510 ≠ 50
