Multiplication and division are very important because we use it all the time and if you don’t no these you will struggle in maths… but don’t worry if read this page and you will be an expert on it in a few minutes.
Firstly lets start with Multiplication. Multiplication is basically repeated addition. There is something called a timetables but I will explain later for now let explain how multiplication works. So if I want to add 5+5+5+5+5+5 you just do 5×6 (x or times is what we represent the multiplication symbol as). 5 is the number that your multiplying and 6 is how many times you are multiplying that number and visa versa. So the answer to that is 30 and that’s were your timetables get in handy so let me explain what the table is.
Times table is a table that goes through numbers that you multiply to get an answer and you have to memorise this answer you can’t memorise all of them so you only need to know 1-12. I will show you what I mean.
1’s time tables (When you multiply a number by 0 it will always equal 0)
1×0=0 2×0=0 …….. and so on up to 12×0=0
1×1=1 2×1=2
1×2=2 2×2=4
1×3=3 …. all the way up to 2×12=24
…. all the way up to 1×12=12
So you have to memorise all of those numbers. Here is a picture that has all the times tables from 1-12.
Now let me give you examples of multiplication questions:
If there were 5 people and each of them had 6 apples. How many apples are there all together? (You have to know your times tables to do this question in short time).
- The first thing we have to do is 5×6 because each of the people have 6 apples and there are 5 people so we multiply 5×6.
- Then you do therefore the answer is 30 apples.
Lets give another example
Jim is going to have a party and he needs to give out 1 party bag and 2 chocolates to each person. There are 8 people that are coming to the party. How many party bags and chocolates does Jim need to order?
- First we do 1×8=8 party bags (we do this because we need to work out how many party bags he needs to order)
- Then we do 2×8=16
- Therefore the answer is 8 party bags and 16 chocolates.
Now you should be an expert at basic multiplication… But, you can’t be an expert if you do NO PRACTICE !
Division
Now we are going to talk about division. To do division you need to know your times tables really well! So if you think you know your times tables just read this page and in blink of an eye you will become an expert at division!
Now first we have to know the definition of division: Division is when you seperate something into equal parts or groups. (The symbol for division is ‘÷’)
So we all know that 6×5=30. Now lets do it the other way like 30÷6=5, because we know that 6×5=30. So we basically saying how many times do you need to add 5 to get 30 and visa versa. Now lets give some examples of questions that have division in it.
Tom had 72 lollies and needed to split it up between 9 friends how many lollies do each friend get?

- First we do 72÷9=8 (because 9×8=72)
- So therefore the answer is 8 lollies.
Lets do another example:
If Jim had 24 apples and he needed to split it up into 6 groups. How many groups are there?
- If there are 24 apples and she needed to split it up into 6 groups it is the same has 24÷6=4
- Therefore the answer is 24 groups.
